Update: Gor Mahia lost the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup final 2-1 after extra time to Rayon Sports at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on 7 August. The report on their semi-final win follows below.

Ten-man Gor Mahia showed great resilience to beat Sudanese giants Al Hilal 8-7 on penalties and reach the final of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.

Semi-final: Gor Mahia 1-1 Al Hilal (8-7 on penalties)

The semi-final at Kigali Pelé Stadium finished 1-1 after extra time. Gor Mahia went ahead in the 34th minute when Steven Ebuela turned the ball into his own net, but Al Hilal equalised ten minutes later through Ansumana Samura.

Gor's task became harder when Jackson Dwang was sent off for a second yellow card. Despite playing with ten men, K'Ogalo stayed organised through extra time and won a tense sudden-death shootout 8-7. Coach Charles Akonnor praised his players' determination against one of the region's strongest clubs.

The final: Rayon Sports 2-1 Gor Mahia (after extra time)

Rayon Sports took the lead through Kameni Herman in the 28th minute before Sharif Musa equalised for Gor ten minutes into the second half. Daniel Muhozi then won it for Rayon with an acrobatic finish in extra time, ending the Rwandan club's 28-year wait for the title.

Gor Mahia took home US$20,000 (about KSh2.5 million) as runners-up, while Rayon collected US$30,000.

Gor Mahia's Kagame Cup history

Gor Mahia have won the CECAFA club title three times, in 1980, 1981 and 1985. Their run to the 2026 final was their best in years, but the wait for a fourth regional crown goes on.

A short history of the Kagame Cup

The CECAFA club championship is one of the oldest club competitions in Africa. Its first officially recognised edition was played in 1974. The tournament became known as the Kagame Interclub Cup in 2002, when Rwandan President Paul Kagame began sponsoring it. The 2026 edition, held in Rwanda from 24 July to early August, marked the tournament's return to the country after a seven-year absence.

Tanzania's Simba are the most successful club in the competition's history with six titles, followed by their rivals Young Africans with five.

Kenya's record in the competition

Kenyan clubs have a strong history in the tournament, though most of it is from earlier decades:

  • AFC Leopards (formerly Abaluhya): 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1997
  • Gor Mahia: 1980, 1981 and 1985
  • Tusker (formerly Kenya Breweries): 1988, 1989, 2000, 2001 and 2008
  • Luo Union: 1976 and 1977

Tusker's 2008 win was the last by a Kenyan club, which is why Gor Mahia's run to the 2026 final mattered so much. It was a chance to end a long Kenyan wait.

What went right for Gor

Gor Mahia showed real character in Kigali. Beating a club of Al Hilal's size with ten men, and then winning a sudden-death shootout, required discipline and fitness. In the final they came back from a goal down against the hosts, in front of a packed Amahoro Stadium, and took the game to extra time.

What went wrong

The final was decided by small margins. Gor struggled to create clear chances after equalising, and Rayon's winner came from a moment of individual quality. Fatigue from back-to-back tough matches may also have played a part.

Why the tournament still matters

For Kenyan clubs, the Kagame Cup is useful preparation before the domestic season and CAF competitions. It offers competitive matches against strong regional opponents, prize money and exposure across East Africa. Gor's run gave their squad valuable minutes ahead of the new season, even if the trophy went to Rwanda.
