Barcelona had won all nine of their La Liga games before Sunday. Real Madrid left Camp Nou with that record broken. Kylian Mbappé scored both Madrid goals in a 1-2 win on Matchday 10, the second one late in the game and his 100th for the club, and José Mourinho marked his first Clásico in more than 13 years by sliding on his knees in front of the away fans.

A Lucky Opener Before the Break

Madrid went ahead in the 41st minute, and not in a pretty way. Diomande crossed from the right, the ball took a deflection off Gerard Martín and came off Mbappé's thigh into the net. Barcelona had controlled long spells of the half, but Madrid went into the dressing room a goal up.

The Cancelo Stamp and Raphinha's Equaliser

The big talking point of the second half came on 56 minutes, when João Cancelo stamped on Diomande. Madrid wanted a red card. Cancelo stayed on. Five minutes later Barcelona were level: Pedri played a clever reverse pass and Raphinha finished to make it 1-1.

Both goalkeepers then had work to do. Andriy Lunin kept out a Gerard Martín header, and at the other end Joan García stopped efforts from Arda Güler. Lamine Yamal had a big chance from close range and missed it.

Mbappé's 100th Real Madrid Goal

The winner came late and it was a team goal. Jude Bellingham turned away from his man with a roulette, Güler moved it on, Eduardo Camavinga got past Pau Cubarsí, and Mbappé finished. It was his 100th goal for Real Madrid, and it came on the night before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London.

Mourinho ran down the touchline and dropped to his knees. Madrid did all of this without Vinícius Júnior, who was suspended.

What the Result Means

Barcelona are still top of La Liga, two points ahead of Atlético Madrid and three ahead of Real Madrid. But this was their second defeat in a matter of days after losing 4-2 to PSG in the Champions League. Hansi Flick pointed to fatigue, with his side playing four games in 12 days. Mourinho, for his part, still had questions about the Cancelo tackle.

For Madrid, the gap is now small, and they closed it without one of their best players.
