Update: Migori Youth went on to win the 2025/26 National Super League (NSL) title with 81 points and were promoted to the FKF Premier League alongside 3K FC and Mombasa United.

Migori Youth's push for promotion was briefly thrown into doubt in June 2026 by a legal battle over a points deduction.

The four-point deduction

On 2 June 2026, the FKF Appeals Committee docked Migori Youth four points and fined them KSh100,000 for fielding an ineligible player, Collins Ouma Otieno, in a match against Kabati Youth on 11 January 2026. The committee found that his registration had been processed before the transfer window opened.

Tribunal steps in

The next day, the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) issued interim orders suspending the deduction pending a full hearing. That restored Migori to the top of the table and kept their title hopes alive.

Sealing the title

Coach Sammy Owano kept his players focused on the pitch, saying the team had only one plan: promotion. Migori finished the season as champions with 81 points after a 1-1 draw with 3K FC at the Moi Stadium in Embu on the final day, while 3K finished second on 77 and Mombasa United third on 76.

Premier League football returns to Migori

Promotion brings top-flight football back to Migori County. Migori Youth begin their 2026/27 FKF Premier League campaign at home to former champions Kenya Police at Awendo Green Stadium on 11 October.

Why the registration rules matter

The case against Migori Youth turned on a technical point: the date on which a player's registration was processed. That may sound minor, but registration rules exist to protect the fairness of a competition. Clubs can only sign players inside official transfer windows, so a registration processed too early can be challenged by rivals.

For lower-league clubs with small administrative teams, the lesson is simple. Keep copies of every registration document, check dates against the official FKF transfer window, and confirm a player's status before fielding him. One paperwork error can cost points, money and, in a tight title race, promotion itself.

The role of the Sports Disputes Tribunal

The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) is the independent body that hears appeals in Kenyan sport, including decisions made by federations such as FKF. Its interim orders in Migori's case did not decide who was right. They simply froze the points deduction until a full hearing, so the club was not punished before its appeal had been heard. That kind of protection is an important part of a fair system, even if it adds uncertainty for other teams.

How Migori won the league

Migori Youth's title was built on consistency over a long NSL season. Finishing on 81 points, four ahead of 3K FC and five ahead of Mombasa United, showed that their lead was not just the result of the tribunal decision. Coach Sammy Owano kept the squad focused on football while the legal case was going on, and the team delivered on the pitch.

Top-flight football returns to Migori County

Migori County has a strong football culture, and Awendo was previously home to Sony Sugar, a former top-flight club. Migori Youth's promotion gives local fans a Premier League team to follow again and brings big clubs such as Gor Mahia, Tusker and AFC Leopards to the region.

The challenge ahead

Promotion is only the first step. Newly promoted Kenyan clubs often find the Premier League a big jump in quality, intensity and cost. Higher wages, longer trips and stricter club licensing requirements all add pressure. As Kariobangi Sharks' experience shows, running a top-flight club can cost tens of millions of shillings a year. Migori Youth will need strong local support, reliable sponsors and smart recruitment to stay up.
