Kenyan midfielder Timothy Ouma has gone from the pitches of Kawangware to winning a league title in Europe. After helping Lech Poznań win Poland's Ekstraklasa in 2025/26, the Harambee Stars star joined English Championship side Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Slavia Prague in August 2026.

From RYSA to Europe

Born in Nairobi in June 2004, Ouma developed at Riruta Youth Sports Academy (RYSA) before signing for Nairobi City Stars, where he made 56 league appearances. In 2022, he moved to Swedish club IF Elfsborg, where his energetic performances in midfield attracted interest from bigger clubs.

Slavia Prague and a title-winning loan in Poland

In February 2025, Ouma joined Czech giants Slavia Prague on a long-term contract. Chances were limited in Prague, so he moved on a season-long loan to Lech Poznań for 2025/26. The move paid off: he made 34 appearances in all competitions and played a key role as Lech won the Ekstraklasa title.

Speaking on his return to Nairobi after the season, Ouma said the campaign had its ups and downs but winning the league made it a great year for him, adding that he had worked hard to rebuild his reputation.

A new challenge at Charlton Athletic

On 10 August 2026, Ouma joined Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Slavia, with an option for Charlton to make the move permanent. Manager Nathan Jones said the club had followed him for a long time and expects him to add quality to the midfield. At Charlton, he joined fellow Kenya international Collins Sichenje, who later suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Harambee Stars and AFCON 2027

Ouma has 12 caps for Kenya since his debut against Uganda in November 2021. Regular football in England's demanding Championship should strengthen his case for a key role in Benni McCarthy's midfield ahead of AFCON 2027, which Kenya co-hosts.

An inspiration for young Kenyan players

Ouma's journey shows what is possible for young players who combine talent with discipline and good guidance. From an academy in Riruta to a European title and English football, his story gives hope to young players across Kawangware and the rest of Kenya.

Why Riruta matters in his story

Ouma's early development at Riruta Youth Sports Academy is a reminder of how important Nairobi's community academies are. RYSA gave him regular coaching and matches long before he joined a professional club, and Riruta continues to produce players for Kenyan clubs today.

The Elfsborg years

His move to Sweden in 2022 was the turning point. Playing for IF Elfsborg gave him regular football in a well-organised league, with good coaching, modern facilities and a clear pathway for young players. Many African players have used Scandinavian clubs as a stepping stone, and Ouma's performances there earned him the move to Slavia Prague.

What the Championship will demand

The English Championship is one of the most physically demanding leagues in Europe, with 46 league matches in a season and frequent midweek fixtures. For a box-to-box midfielder like Ouma, it will test his fitness, his ability to win duels and his decision-making under pressure. Doing well at Charlton could earn a permanent deal, since the loan includes an option to buy.

Ouma and Sichenje at Charlton

Ouma joined a Charlton squad that already included Kenyan defender Collins Sichenje, giving the club two Harambee Stars players. Sichenje's season-ending knee injury means Ouma is now Kenya's main representative at the club, and his performances will be followed closely back home.

His role for Kenya

With 12 caps since his debut against Uganda in 2021, Ouma is one of the more experienced players in Benni McCarthy's squad despite his age. In a midfield that needs energy and ball-winning, his ability to cover ground and support attacks will be important at AFCON 2027, which Kenya co-host from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

Lessons for young players

  • Choose moves that guarantee playing time, as Ouma did with his loan to Lech Poznań.
  • Use smaller European leagues to adapt before aiming higher.
  • Stay patient after setbacks: limited minutes at Slavia did not end his progress.
