Tusker FC beat Gor Mahia 3-1 to win the FKF Super Cup at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, 23 August 2026. The annual curtain-raiser between the league champions and the cup winners gave the Brewers a statement victory before the 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League season.

How the match unfolded

Tusker took control with two goals in quick succession before half-time. Frank Oduor opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a left-footed strike after a deflected free-kick, and Tusker doubled their lead moments later with a powerful finish into the top corner.

Gor Mahia pulled one back in the 38th minute to make it 2-1 at the break. Gor had chances to level, with Denis Omedi forcing a save from Tusker goalkeeper Brian Bwire and Ben Stanley sending another effort over the bar.

Tusker settled the match in the 54th minute when Ian Simiyu scored with a diving header from a Yakeen Muteheli cross. Tusker then managed the game well to secure the trophy.

What the result means

For Tusker head coach Jullien Mette, the win was an early sign that the Brewers can challenge the champions this season. It was Tusker's fourth FKF Super Cup title.

For Gor Mahia, it was a disappointing start to the defence of their 2025/26 league crown, their record 22nd title. Coach Charles Akonnor urged fans not to panic, saying his team knows what it needs to do before the league begins.

What is the FKF Super Cup?

The FKF Super Cup is a one-off match played before the start of each Kenyan Premier League season. It usually brings together the league champions and the winners of the domestic cup, giving fans a competitive preview of the new campaign.

How both teams started the league

The Super Cup proved a good guide for Tusker. They opened their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Ulinzi Stars, according to Citizen Digital, and also moved within two wins of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after beating Sudan's Al-Ahli Wad Medani 3-2 on aggregate. Their next continental test is against Tanzania's Singida Black Stars.

Gor Mahia also bounced back. They began their title defence with a 4-2 win over Murang'a SEAL at Nyayo, leaving the two Super Cup finalists level on points with Shabana at the top of the early table.

Why Tusker look like serious challengers

Tusker have a long history at the top of Kenyan football. As Kenya Breweries, they reached the final of the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1994. Under Julien Mette, the current squad combines experienced players such as captain Abud Omar with younger options, and the Super Cup showed a team that is organised and clinical when chances come.

What Gor Mahia need to fix

Gor's defending was the main concern on the day. Conceding twice in quick succession before half-time, and then again early in the second half, gave Tusker control. Akonnor's side have the quality to recover, but the title will be hard to defend if they keep giving away soft goals in big games.

Key players to watch

  • Frank Oduor (Tusker): scored the opener and looked sharp in attack.
  • Ian Simiyu (Tusker): his header sealed the trophy.
  • Brian Bwire (Tusker): made important saves when Gor pushed for an equaliser.
  • Denis Omedi (Gor Mahia): Gor's most dangerous attacker on the day.

Is the Super Cup a good predictor?

The Super Cup is only one match, and winners do not always go on to win the league. But it does show which teams have prepared well during pre-season. This year it suggested that the title race could be a genuine contest between Gor Mahia and Tusker, with Shabana and AFC Leopards also in the mix.
