Defending champions Gor Mahia finally begin their SportPesa Premier League title defence on Tuesday evening when they host Murang'a SEAL at Nyayo National Stadium. After a long, frustrating wait caused by the delayed start to the season, K'Ogalo fans will at last see their team chase league points again.

Match Details

  • Fixture: Gor Mahia vs Murang'a SEAL
  • Competition: SportPesa Premier League 2026/27, Round One
  • Date and time: Tuesday, October 13, 2026, 7pm
  • Venue: Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi

The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at 4pm before being moved to Tuesday night. Gor Mahia have confirmed that tickets bought for the original date remain valid, so fans do not need to buy new ones.

Gor Mahia: Champions With a Point to Prove

Gor Mahia enter the new campaign as league champions after coach Charles Akonnor guided them to the title last season. The months since then have been mixed. K'Ogalo reached the final of the CECAFA Kagame Cup, where they lost to Rwanda's Rayon Sports, but their CAF Champions League run ended in the first preliminary round. Egyptian giants Pyramids FC won 2-0 in Nairobi and 5-1 in Cairo to go through 7-1 on aggregate.

That heavy defeat led some fans to question Akonnor, but the club has publicly backed him. Secretary General Nicannor Arum pointed to the coach's league title and Kagame Cup final, and argued that the squad had little competitive football before facing a far more established Pyramids side. A strong start to the league would go a long way to calming nerves.

New faces to watch

Gor Mahia were busy in the transfer market, with Akonnor explaining that the club relied too heavily on a small group of players last season. New arrivals include Daniel Sakari, Paul Okoth, Michael Onyango, David Okoth, Lesley Otieno, Hansel Ochieng, Humphrey Katasi, Enock Machaka and Ghanaian midfielder Ebenezer Ocran. Okoth and Otieno both scored on their competitive debuts at the Kagame Cup, and Ocran impressed in midfield.

Team news will be worth watching closely. Reports in September said several squad members had been sidelined on disciplinary grounds, so Akonnor's line-up on Tuesday could include several of the new signings.

Murang'a SEAL: Dangerous Opponents

Murang'a SEAL are no easy opening fixture. Last season they put together a 10-match unbeaten run, the longest in the league at the time, and they gave Gor Mahia real problems in both meetings. Their organisation and willingness to press high mean the champions will need to be sharp from the first whistle.

Head-to-Head: Gor Won Both Last Season

Gor Mahia beat Murang'a SEAL twice in 2025/26, but neither win came easily.

  • January 14, 2026 – Gor Mahia 3-2 Murang'a SEAL (Kasarani): SEAL led 2-0 in the first half through Joe Waithira and Francis Memusi before goals from Felix Oluoch, Paul Ochuoga and an 82nd-minute winner from Ebenezer Asifuah completed the comeback.
  • May 17, 2026 – Murang'a SEAL 1-3 Gor Mahia: Samuel Kapen, Musa Shariff and Asifuah scored as Gor moved four points clear in the title race, with Waithira again on target for SEAL.

Round One So Far

Gor Mahia start the season playing catch-up. Shabana lead the early table after a 1-0 win over 10-man Posta Rangers on opening day, while Mathare United and APS Bomet drew 0-0. A win on Tuesday would put the champions straight among the early leaders.

What to Expect

Expect a big crowd at Nyayo and plenty of pressure on Gor Mahia to start well. The champions have more quality in their squad, but many new players are still settling in, and last season's meetings show SEAL can make life difficult. If Gor can control midfield and avoid giving SEAL an early lead, they should have enough to begin their defence with three points.
