Harambee Stars defender Collins Sichenje is expected to miss the rest of the 2026/27 season after suffering a serious knee injury playing for Charlton Athletic against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup in late August 2026.

Charlton confirmed that he has undergone surgery, which the club described as successful, and has begun his rehabilitation with the club's medical staff.

How the injury happened

Sichenje was hurt after a challenge from Tottenham forward Mathys Tel. He tried to continue but collapsed moments later and had to be carried off on a stretcher. Charlton went on to lose the match 5-1.

Charlton manager Nathan Jones called it a tough injury for the player and the club, said Sichenje would be out for an extended period, and added that the club expects him to come back stronger. Jones also indicated the club might need to strengthen its defence before the transfer window closed.

A blow for Benni McCarthy

The injury came just before Kenya's September AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Eritrea and Guinea, and Sichenje was already missing from coach Benni McCarthy's provisional squad. Without him, Kenya drew 1-1 with Eritrea and lost 1-0 to Guinea, results that pushed Harambee Stars down to 114th in the FIFA ranking.

Sichenje had recently returned from another injury and was starting to earn more minutes at Charlton, which makes the timing especially frustrating.

Collins Sichenje's career so far

Born in Butere, Sichenje started at Green Commandos before joining AFC Leopards in 2019. After a short spell with PAOK B in Greece, he returned to Leopards and then moved to Swedish club AIK in 2022.

He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at KuPS in Finland, joined Serbian side FK Vojvodina on loan and then permanently in 2024, before moving to Charlton. He has eight caps for Kenya since debuting against South Sudan in March 2021 and was a key part of the team that reached the CHAN 2024 quarter-finals.

What a knee injury like this involves

Charlton have not published full medical details, but long-term knee injuries that need surgery usually involve months of rehabilitation. Players typically work through stages: protecting the joint after the operation, rebuilding strength in the leg, returning to running, and then gradually reintroducing contact training before being considered for matches.

Kenya's defence without Sichenje

Sichenje's absence leaves Benni McCarthy with fewer experienced options at centre-back. Since his injury, Kenya drew 1-1 with Eritrea in Nairobi and lost 1-0 to Guinea in Conakry, with both goals conceded after mistakes or loose balls in their own area. A calm, experienced defender who plays regularly in Europe is exactly what Kenya have been missing.

With Kenya co-hosting AFCON 2027, McCarthy will now need to build his defence for the tournament without relying on Sichenje being fit. That could open the door for other defenders to establish themselves before the finals.

The double-header against South Africa

Harambee Stars' next qualifiers are against group leaders South Africa in November. Those matches will test Kenya's defence more than any game so far, and they are an important chance for McCarthy to settle on a back line ahead of AFCON.

A career built step by step

Sichenje's journey shows how Kenyan players can build European careers through smaller leagues. From Green Commandos in schools football to AFC Leopards, then to clubs in Greece, Sweden, Finland and Serbia before England, each move gave him more experience and better coaching. Young Kenyan defenders can learn from that route: it is rarely a single big transfer that makes a career, but steady progress at the right level.

Will he return before AFCON 2027?

AFCON 2027 is less than a year away, so his recovery timeline will be watched closely. Much will depend on how his rehabilitation progresses and whether he can get back into regular football at club level before the tournament.
