Kenya's Junior Starlets are in Morocco and counting down to the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, where they open their Group E campaign against China PR on Monday, October 19. A visa hitch wrecked their planned training camp in Spain, but coach Mildred Cheche believes the extra time in Morocco could work in Kenya's favour.

This is the second straight World Cup for Kenya's U-17 girls, and the target this time is bigger than simply turning up. Here is everything Kenyan fans need to know before the tournament starts.

Why the Junior Starlets Missed Their Spain Camp

The original plan was a two-week high-performance camp in Spain, built around warm-up matches that included Australia and Real Betis. The squad was due to fly out on Monday, October 5.

That departure never happened. In a statement that day, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) said the team's trip had been postponed because the visa process was still ongoing, adding that it was engaging the relevant authorities.

By midweek the Spain leg had been dropped altogether. The squad instead travelled straight to Morocco, arriving on Thursday, October 8, to finish their preparations on the ground where the tournament will be played.

It was an awkward setback, especially after FKF president Hussein Mohammed had hosted the players for a send-off dinner on Friday, October 2. Losing a block of quality friendlies so close to a World Cup is never ideal for a young side.

Cheche Sees an Upside in Early Acclimatisation

Cheche has chosen to look at the positives. Speaking after the team settled in Morocco, she pointed out that there is an advantage in acclimatisation, since her players now have more days to adjust to the conditions before a ball is kicked in anger.

She also said the girls are looking forward to their first match against China, and the technical bench was still hoping to arrange friendly matches in Morocco before the opener.

Before the trip, Cheche made it clear she does not want Kenya to be tourists. Her message has been that the team is going to compete, not just participate, with getting out of the group as the first goal.

Junior Starlets Group E Fixtures and Venue

Kenya were drawn in Group E alongside the United States, China PR and Samoa. All three of their group matches are scheduled for the Women's Football Complex in Morocco:

Kenya vs China PR: Monday, October 19, 2026.

Kenya vs United States: Thursday, October 22, 2026.

Kenya vs Samoa: Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The United States are the biggest name in the group and will start as favourites. China PR are making their fifth appearance at this tournament, while Samoa are at only their second. On paper, the Samoa game looks like Kenya's best chance of points, but the China opener could decide how the whole group plays out.

How the 2026 Format Works

The tournament runs from October 17 to November 7 and now features 24 teams, split into six groups of four. The top two in each group go through to the knockout rounds, along with the four best third-placed teams. That means a single win, plus a decent goal difference, could be enough for Kenya to reach the knockout rounds for the first time.

From South Africa Triumph to a Second World Cup

Kenya booked their place in Morocco in July by beating South Africa 5-1 on aggregate in the final round of African qualifying. It was a statement result against one of the continent's stronger women's football nations.

The qualification also confirmed Kenya's growing reputation at youth level. In 2024 the Junior Starlets became the first Kenyan football team to play at a FIFA World Cup, when they travelled to the Dominican Republic. They won one and lost two of their group games and went home early, but the experience has shaped this group.

Captain Bevarline Awuor has said the squad learned from that tournament and worked on the areas that let them down. Kenya won one match last time, she said, and this time the aim is to win more than one, and even go deep into the competition.

What a Strong Run Would Mean for Kenyan Women's Football

For Kenyan football as a whole, the Junior Starlets have become one of the few genuine success stories of recent years. Reaching back-to-back World Cups gives schools, academies and clubs in the FKF Women's Premier League a clear pathway to point young players towards.

It also matters for the senior Harambee Starlets, who exited WAFCON 2026 without a point. Many of these teenagers will be pushing for senior call-ups within the next few years, and tournament experience against the United States and China is the kind of exposure local football cannot easily provide.

Kenya will not be the only African side in Morocco. Hosts Morocco, Nigeria and Zambia are among the continent's other representatives. No African team has ever won the U-17 Women's World Cup, and North Korea arrive as defending champions after winning a record fourth title in 2025.
