After weeks of court battles and uncertainty, the 2026/27 Kenyan Premier League is finally back. Nairobi United opened the season against KCB at Police SACCO Stadium on Friday, October 9, and the rest of Round One is being played across the week.

The new campaign comes with a few rule changes that could shape squads, match days and the fight at the bottom of the table. Here is everything fans need to know.

Why the 2026/27 Season Started Late

The kick-off was pushed back by a dispute over which promotion and relegation regulations should apply: the 2019 FKF rules or a revised 2025 version. The matter went to court, and the High Court eventually allowed the league to go ahead under the 2019 regulations.

Sponsorship was the other open question. SportPesa has taken the league's title sponsorship, so the competition runs as the SportPesa League this season.

Foreign Players: Seven Registered, Five on Match Day

Following talks between FKF and the clubs, each team can now register up to seven foreign players in its squad. On match day, however, no more than five foreigners can be named in the squad for a league game.

The idea is to give clubs more room when building squads while keeping places open for Kenyan players. For the bigger clubs with deep foreign contingents, coaches will have to rotate carefully, especially during busy fixture periods.

Two Ambulances at Every Match

Player safety gets a boost this season. FKF has made it compulsory for every league fixture to have two ambulances at the venue. The rule was agreed before the season began and is meant to speed up emergency response if a player or fan needs urgent care.

For smaller grounds and clubs on tight budgets, meeting this requirement every week will be a real cost, but it is a welcome step for a league that has seen medical scares in the past.

How Promotion and Relegation Work in 2026/27

Because the league is running under the 2019 FKF regulations, the system looks like this:

  • The bottom two Premier League teams are relegated automatically to the National Super League (NSL).
  • The top two NSL teams are promoted automatically.
  • The team finishing 16th in the Premier League plays the third-placed NSL side in a play-off for the last top-flight place.

That play-off has already caused drama. Last season's tie between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United was abandoned, and FKF later ruled in Mombasa United's favour. Mombasa United are now in the Premier League, while Sharks drop to the NSL.

Gor Mahia Begin Title Defence on Tuesday

Defending champions Gor Mahia, who won a record 22nd league title last season with 69 points, open their campaign against Murang'a Seal at Nyayo Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:00 pm. The match was moved from its original Saturday slot, and the club has confirmed that tickets bought before the postponement are still valid.

K'Ogalo's build-up has not been smooth. Charles Akonnor's side lost the FKF Super Cup 3-1 to Tusker and were beaten by Mathare United in a friendly earlier this month, so Tuesday is a chance to settle nerves. Runners-up AFC Leopards host Bandari at Nyayo on Wednesday, October 14, according to the latest fixture update.

Where to Watch the Kenyan Premier League

Azam TV is the league's main broadcast partner for live matches. Fans without a TV subscription can follow highlights and clips on FKF Digital, the federation's official digital platform.

What It Means for the Season

The foreign-player limit will test squad depth, the ambulance rule will test club finances, and the return of the 2019 relegation format means the bottom of the table will be as tense as the title race. Follow Scorer254 for match reports and analysis throughout the 2026/27 season.
