The Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is the biggest fixture in Kenyan football. For more than half a century, the meeting of K'Ogalo and Ingwe has filled Nairobi's stadiums, divided families and decided league titles.
This guide covers where the rivalry came from, what each club has won, the moments that shaped it and what to expect when the two meet again in the 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League.
What does Mashemeji mean?
Mashemeji is the Kiswahili word for in-laws, and the fixture is often called the Derby of the In-laws. The name is widely understood as a nod to the close ties between the Luo and Luhya communities of western Kenya, whose people have lived side by side and intermarried for generations.
Gor Mahia's support has traditionally come mainly from the Luo community, while AFC Leopards were founded to represent Luhya players and fans. Both clubs are based in Nairobi but trace their roots to the west of the country, which is why the rivalry feels personal as well as sporting. Today both clubs have fans from every part of Kenya.
How the two clubs began
AFC Leopards are the older club. They were founded on 12 March 1964 as Abaluhya United Football Club, became Abaluhya Football Club in 1973 and took the name AFC Leopards in 1980. Their nickname, Ingwe, means leopard.
Gor Mahia were formally established on 17 February 1968 through a merger of Luo Union and Luo Sports Club. The club is named after a legendary medicine man from Luo folklore, and its nickname, K'Ogalo, comes from the same figure.
The two clubs met for the first time on 5 May 1968, only weeks after Gor Mahia's formation, and the rivalry has grown ever since.
Trophies: how the two giants compare
Gor Mahia are Kenya's most successful club. Their 2025/26 triumph was a record 22nd league title. AFC Leopards have won the league 12 times, most recently in 1998, a long wait that their supporters are desperate to end.
- League titles: Gor Mahia 22, AFC Leopards 12.
- Domestic cup: AFC Leopards have won the FKF President's Cup 10 times, most recently in 2017.
- CECAFA club title: AFC Leopards 5 (1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1997), Gor Mahia 3 (1980, 1981, 1985).
- Continental honours: Gor Mahia won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987, still the only continental title won by a Kenyan club. They had also reached the final in 1979.
Gor Mahia also hold a special place in league history for going a whole season unbeaten in 1976, a feat they repeated in 2015.
Moments that shaped the rivalry
The derby has produced great football, but also days the game would rather forget. Crowd trouble has been a recurring problem around big Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards matches. In 2012, after Gor Mahia fans rioted during a match, the Sports Stadia Management Board banned the club from Nyayo and Kasarani for the rest of the season, and a planned derby in the KPL Top 8 Cup had to be postponed.
On the pitch, both sides have enjoyed memorable days. In June 2014 at Nyayo, Leopards came from behind to beat Gor, with Jacob Keli, Charles Okwemba and Bernard Wanyama on the scoresheet after Timonah Wanyonyi had given Gor the lead. More recently, Leopards beat Gor in December 2025, before Gor Mahia took the return meeting 1-0 on 26 April 2026 on their way to the title.
Why the 2025/26 title race made it bigger
The 2025/26 season was the most competitive title race between the two clubs in years. AFC Leopards pushed Gor all the way, and the title was only settled when Leopards lost 2-1 to APS Bomet, handing K'Ogalo the crown with two matches to spare. Gor finished on 69 points and Leopards on 64.
That finish, together with President William Ruto's KSh35 million pledge to Leopards in July 2026, means Ingwe start the new season believing they can finally end their long wait for a league title.
Where the derby is played
The Mashemeji Derby has usually been played at one of Nairobi's big stadiums: Nyayo National Stadium, the Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani, and historically Nairobi City Stadium. Big derbies need large, secure venues, and the choice of stadium is often decided by FKF and the security authorities close to the match.
Tips for fans going to the derby
- Buy tickets only through the official channels announced by the clubs or FKF.
- Arrive early: queues at the gates of big derbies can be long.
- Follow stewards' and police instructions, and avoid carrying anything that could be seen as a weapon or projectile.
- Respect rival fans. The derby is a celebration of Kenyan football, and incidents in the stands can lead to bans and empty stadiums.
