Update, 10 October 2026: The second leg was abandoned on 6 October after a pitch invasion. On 9 October, the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded the match 2-0 to Mombasa United, who won 4-2 on aggregate and are promoted to the SportPesa Premier League. Kariobangi Sharks are relegated to the National Super League.
First leg: Mombasa United 2-1 Kariobangi Sharks
Mombasa United hold a 2-1 aggregate lead over Kariobangi Sharks going into the second leg of the FKF Premier League promotion-relegation playoff. The coastal side will hope to get at least a draw to secure promotion to the top tier. The return leg is in Nairobi on Tuesday at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Dennis Mabeya put United ahead in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot, and Waziri Shentembo added a second ten minutes later. Sharks stayed in the tie when Wayne Otieno pulled one back in the 83rd minute. Sharks also had chances, including a close-range miss by Franklin Amolo.
The stakes are high for both clubs. Sharks were favourites on paper after finishing second from bottom of the previous top-flight season. United have never played at that level. United finished third in the National Super League, and Sharks finished 16th.
Why this playoff was needed
This tie only exists because of a legal dispute. The 2019 regulations provide for a playoff between the 16th-placed Premier League team and the third-placed National Super League side. The 2025 regulations abolished the playoff and brought in automatic promotion and relegation. Sharks were relegated under the new rules and went to court. The High Court in Murang'a directed that the league should not begin until a playoff was played. The Football Kenya Federation then brokered an agreement for two legs.
What both camps said before the second leg
Mombasa United midfielder Christian Lubulu says his side are staying focused despite the off-field noise. He said the controversies were an administrative issue, that the tie remains "close and open," and that the team needs to improve in defence, attack and second balls. Coach Abdulhamid Moallin knows the tie is still open. Sharks must score at least twice more than United in Nairobi to turn it around.
What happened in the second leg
The return leg at Ulinzi Sports Complex on 6 October never reached full time. Mombasa United scored early, but Sharks fought back through Patillah Omoto and Douglas Omanga to lead 2-1 on the night and draw level at 3-3 on aggregate. Midway through the second half, referee John Sulwe awarded Mombasa United a penalty for a shirt pull. Sharks players and officials surrounded him, and people from the Sharks side came onto the pitch and attacked him. The match was abandoned in the 64th minute.
The FKF ruling
On 9 October, the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee ruled that Sharks were responsible for the abandonment and awarded the second leg 2-0 to Mombasa United, giving them a 4-2 aggregate win. Incidents of violence were referred to the FKF Disciplinary Committee. Read our full report on the ruling for the details.
Mombasa United's first Premier League match
Mombasa United's top-flight debut came on 14 October against Kakamega Homeboyz at Mbaraki Sports Ground. They lost 1-0 to a late Charles Momanyi header in the 87th minute, according to Citizen Digital. Coach Abdulhamid Moalim said it was always going to be a hard first match and that his players would learn from it.
What this saga means for Kenyan football
The playoff showed how much damage unclear rules and slow legal processes can do. The dispute delayed the start of the league, and the abandoned second leg, with a referee assaulted on the pitch, damaged the image of Kenyan football less than a year before the country co-hosts AFCON 2027. Clear regulations agreed well before each season, operational disciplinary and appeals committees, and better matchday security are all needed to stop it happening again.
