Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy signalled in late May 2026 that the time for experimenting with squad selection was over. With Kenya co-hosting AFCON 2027, his push for a settled core of players makes sense, but recent results show how much work remains.

The shadow of the 8-0 defeat to Senegal

McCarthy's comments came with Kenya still haunted by the 8-0 defeat to Senegal in November 2025. He has said the fixture was a late, forced change that was out of his hands, but the result exposed how a lack of cohesion is punished at the top level of African football.

For years, Harambee Stars squads have changed constantly, with qualifiers sometimes used as testing grounds. At the highest level, where Kenya face sides like Senegal, Morocco and Ivory Coast, tactical unfamiliarity is costly.

Why a settled core matters

Building around a consistent group allows players to understand each other's movements, set-piece routines and pressing triggers. It also gives the coach a clear tactical identity, something Kenya have lacked for a long time.

Looking abroad for quality

McCarthy has made clear he is scouting players of Kenyan heritage in Europe. Kenyans abroad such as Timothy Ouma, who won the Ekstraklasa with Lech Poznań before joining Charlton Athletic, and Job Ochieng, now in Real Sociedad's first team, show the level he wants to build around.

How results have gone since

Kenya climbed to 109th in the FIFA ranking in June 2026 after a 4-0 win over Lesotho. But a 1-1 home draw with Eritrea and a 1-0 defeat in Guinea in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers in September and October pushed them down to 114th, their lowest ranking since 2018. Injuries, including Collins Sichenje's season-ending knee problem, have not helped.

The AFCON 2027 pressure

As co-hosts with Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya will play at AFCON 2027 in front of home fans from 19 June to 17 July 2027. That guarantees attention, but also pressure. A tournament-ready squad cannot be built months before kick-off, which is why McCarthy's focus on stability now is the right approach.

Our view

McCarthy's stance is the tough approach Harambee Stars need. Earning a place in the squad should be a privilege based on form and quality, not a reward handed out freely. The next step is turning that clarity into results on the pitch.

Who is Benni McCarthy?

McCarthy brings a strong playing record to the Kenya job. He is South Africa's all-time leading goalscorer and won the UEFA Champions League with Porto in 2004. As a coach, he managed Cape Town City and AmaZulu in South Africa before working as a first-team coach at Manchester United. He was appointed Harambee Stars head coach in 2025.

The CHAN experience

One of the strongest signs of progress under McCarthy came at CHAN 2024, the tournament for home-based players, where Kenya co-hosted and reached the quarter-finals. That run showed what a settled group of players can achieve with clear instructions and home support, and it is the kind of foundation McCarthy wants for AFCON 2027.

What a settled squad looks like

  • A clear first-choice goalkeeper and back four who play together regularly.
  • A midfield built around players with European experience, such as Timothy Ouma.
  • Reliable goalscorers, with Michael Olunga and young striker Ryan Ogam among the options.
  • A small number of planned changes, not wholesale rotation between camps.

The November test

Kenya's next AFCON qualifiers are a double-header against Group D leaders South Africa in November. For McCarthy, facing his home country will be both personal and a useful test of how far Kenya have come. Competitive results against strong opposition will matter far more than friendlies in building confidence before the finals.

The case against too much stability

There is another side to the debate. Some fans argue that in-form players at home and abroad should always get a chance, even late in the cycle. The answer is balance: a clear core of players, with space for one or two new faces who have clearly earned their place through consistent club performances.

What success at AFCON 2027 would look like

As co-hosts, Kenya will be expected to get out of their group. Reaching the knockout stage in front of home fans would be a major achievement and could change how the country views its national team for years to come.
